Seminars@Hadley Presents: Yahoo! for Web Accessibility Date: Thursday, February 24, 2011 Time: 1:00 p.m. CST, 19:00 GMT  Is Web accessibility a concern for you or your clients and customers? Are you finding navigating the Web to be an impossible quest?  The Web is an increasingly important resource in many aspects of our daily lives: education, employment, business, shopping, health care, recreation and much more; but navigating its waters and accessing its ports can be a difficult task for disabled Web sailors. On the other hand, when Web sites, Web technologies and Web tools are properly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality. Join Seminars@Hadley as Yahoo! Senior Accessibility Program Manager Victor Tsaran talks about how Yahoo! promotes Web access within its community and across the World Wide Web.  Among other things, you'll learn how Yahoo! uses its Accessibility Lab to design, test, and create sites, applications and features that better meet the needs of users with disabilities.  This 60 minute seminar will be moderated by Hadley Outreach Coordinator Billy Brookshire. Hadley Announces Three New Access Technology Courses!

 

NEW! The Hadley School for the Blind Launches Three New Access Technology Courses

We are pleased to announce the launch of three new, structured and practical online courses designed to improve user access technology skills for users of screen readers. Each course consists of two lessons.

 

"Screen Readers: Listening Skills" trains users to increase their speed of listening to a screen reader. The course assists in being able to listen and comprehend a screen reader at 300 words or more a minute. It also teaches techniques to enable a user to listen to a screen reader and listen to another person on the phone at the same time.  This skill lends itself to success in most work places.  "Screen Readers: Web Browsing" is about navigating Web sites.  This course has lessons that provide tips and advice on the best methods to navigate very accessible Web sites as well as those that present more accessibility challenges.  The Internet is "an information super highway," and an ability to navigate it efficiently and skillfully is crucial to educational and workplace success. "Screen Readers: Formatting Word Documents" is aimed at sharpening the user's skill in Microsoft Word 2007. This course covers editing text, adjusting fonts, using headings, bullets and much more while using a screen reader. Determining editing and formatting problems with a screen reader can be challenging, but mastering the techniques taught in this course can lead to confident creation of appropriate-looking documents for work or school. ½ CUP WHITE SUGAR FOR DIPPING

 

IN LARGE BOWL, COMBINE FLOUR AND BAKING SODA.

PUT YOUR SPOON AWAY—YOU WON'T NEED IT ANY MORE.

DUMP EVERYTHING BUT THE ½ CUP SUGAR FOR ROLLING INTO YOUR LARGE BOWL—DO NOT STIR.

THINK OF SOMETHING WHICH REALLY MAKES YOU MAD.

NOW MASH, KNEAD, SQUEEZE, POUND AND PULVERIZE THE INGREDIENTS—

DON'T STOP 'TIL EVERYTHING IS WELL BLENDED.

GATHER DOUGH INTO A BIG BALL.

PUT THE ½ CUP GRANULATED SUGAR INTO A BOWL.

ROLL DOUGH INTO SMALL BALLS, ABOUT 1 INCH IN DIAMETER.

ROLL IN BOWL OF SUGAR AND PLACE ON UNGREASED COOKIE SHEET.

BAKE AT 350 DEGREES FOR 10-12 MINS.

Horizons for the blind

ONLINE PRODUCT INFORMATION RESOURCE

               Horizons for the Blind recently launched www.directionsforme.org, a new Internet-based service that makes consumer packaging information

available in an accessible online format for people who are blind, visually impaired, or have trouble reading the small print on packages or labels. The

site includes over 300,000 products in food, health and beauty and general merchandise. Users can find information about preparation directions, nutrition

facts, ingredients, allergy/drug interaction warnings and more.

Seminars @ Hadley Presents: All About Albinism Date: Friday, January 21, 2011 Time:  11:00 a.m. CST, 17:00 GMT You probably have heard the term 'albino' referring to a person with very light skin and hair. But, did you know that people with albinism almost always have some degree of uncorrectable low vision? Do you know what it is like to live with albinism? Join Seminars@Hadley for a 60 minute discussion all about albinism.  Senior Vice President Dawn Turco will question a panel of experts on several aspects of the condition including; the genetics of albinism, the low vision associated with albinism, prominent psycho-social issues people with albinism and parents of children with albinism face and educating a child with albinism. The panel will also address the myths and misconceptions about albinism and talk about NOAH (National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation). Panelists include Sheila Adamo, Chair of the NOAH Board of Directors (mother of four, 11 year old son Joey has albinism), Murray Brilliant PhD, Director at the Center for Human Genetics at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, Susan Dalton, M.S.Ed., CVRT, Transition Specialist (mother of two grown children with albinism), Kelsey Thompson, immediate past Chair of the NOAH Board of Directors (a person with albinism) and Michael McGowan, NOAH Executive Director (a person with albinism). As always, listening to the seminar remains free of charge. There is a US $25 fee associated with completing the seminar for credit (1 CE hour). Professionals interested in receiving continuing education credit will be required to successfully complete a quiz and brief survey before a certificate is issued. treatment for insomnia and daytime sleepiness in totally blind individuals.

Individuals may qualify who:

EOS CANOE TRIP

 

On September 19th, eight adventurous souls embarked on their first Crooked River trip. We left Kent in four canoes and headed down river toward Munroe Falls. For some, it was a time of renewing skills used in the past. For others, it was a time of building new friendships as we paddled down the river. We put to shore at Brust Park several hours later to meet up with several other members for a yummy picnic! We had such a blast that we're hoping to make this an annual event! A Great Big Thanks to the Crooked River Adventures and to our guide, Nate, for coming along with us to make sure no one ended up stranded!

 

 BRAILLE PRODUCT LABELING

 

Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Band-Aids, among other healthcare products, is conducting nationwide test marketing of new packaging which features the name of the product in Braille.  In an effort to encourage this practice, I'd like to urge everyone to contact the company to express their thanks.  When I called their headquarters to let them know I appreciate this effort and to encourage them to begin labeling all their products, I was advised that the best way to accomplish this would be to send them a letter.  If you would like to do the same, send your message to:

If you have encountered other products with Braille labels, please contact Eye On Summit so we can share that information with our members and friends.  We want to support these companies and perhaps encourage others to give it a try.  Personally, I get very tired of making Braille labels for the boxes, bags and other containers which come into my home.
