EOS Fall 2010 Newsletter

FALL 2010

Eye On Summit, the local chapter of the American Council of the Blind, would like you to join us for our fall meetings.  You need not be visually impaired nor must you be a resident of Summit County to attend.  We welcome all visitors!

If you would like further information about our chapter, please call Michelle at 330.686.0076 or Sam at 330.864.6369 or visit our website at

On September 19th, eight adventurous souls embarked on their first Crooked River trip. We left Kent in four canoes and headed down river toward Munroe Falls. For some, it was a time of renewing skills used in the past. For others, it was a time of building new friendships as we paddled down the river. We put to shore at Brust Park several hours later to meet up with several other members for a yummy picnic! We had such a blast that we're hoping to make this an annual event! A Great Big Thanks to the Crooked River Adventures and to our guide, Nate, for coming along with us to make sure no one ended up stranded!

Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Band-Aids, among other healthcare products, is conducting nationwide test marketing of new packaging which features the name of the product in Braille.  In an effort to encourage this practice, I'd like to urge everyone to contact the company to express their thanks.  When I called their headquarters to let them know I appreciate this effort and to encourage them to begin labeling all their products, I was advised that the best way to accomplish this would be to send them a letter.  If you would like to do the same, send your message to:

J&J Snack Foods Corporation, makers of Dogsters frozen dog treats, has been Braille labeling their products for quite some time now.  Dogsters come in two flavors, Kissably Fresh Mint and Peanut Butter and Cheese.  They can be contacted at:

If you have encountered other products with Braille labels, please contact Eye On Summit so we can share that information with our members and friends.  We want to support these companies and perhaps encourage others to give it a try.  Personally, I get very tired of making Braille labels for the boxes, bags and other containers which come into my home.
