Announcing a New Braille Song: "Brailling Signs Is Cool to Do"

This newsletter is best viewed in HTML format.

We are excited to announce the debut of a song about braille called "Brailling Signs Is Cool To Do." Hadley instructor, Linn Sorge and friend and former ambassador to the school, Becky Williams, wrote the lyrics to the song. Musicians Anne Hills, David Roth and Chip Kramer recorded the song and brought it to life.

To learn more about the story of this special song and to listen to it, please visit: http://www.hadley.edu/braillesong

For a free MP3 file of this song, available for a limited time, email sorge@hadley.edu directly with "Brailling Signs Song" in the subject line. If you are a parent of a visually impaired child, an adult braille user, or a blindness professional and want to let us know that, feel free to add it to your email! We'd love to know how you will be using the song.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE PENFRIEND?

REPRINTED FROM THE JANUARY 2011 BRAILLE FORUM.

THIS EASY-TO-USE DEVICE WAS DEVELOPED AND IS MANUFACTURED BY ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BLIND PEOPLE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

THE PENFRIEND IS SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT INTO YOUR POCKET.  IT USES SMALL ADHESIVE LABELS ONTO WHICH YOU CAN RECORD ANY INFORMATION YOU LIKE.  THE SMALL ROUND LABELS ARE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DIME; THE LARGER ONES ARE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A FIFTY-CENT PIECE.  THERE ARE ALSO SQUARE LABELS WHICH ARE APPROXIMATELY THE SIZE OF THE LARGER CIRCLE.  THESE SIZES ACCOMMODATE MOST PILL BOTTLES AVAILABLE AT PHARMACIES.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

REMOVE AN ADHESIVE LABEL FROM THE SHEET OF LABELS.

PLACE IT ON THE LID OF THE BOTTLE.

TURN ON THE PENFRIEND AND PRESS RECORD.

TOUCH THE LABEL WITH THE DEVICE.

WHEN YOU HEAR A BEEP, RECORD THE DESIRED INFORMATION.

THAT’S IT!  YOU NOW HAVE THE INFORMATION YOU NEED!

LABELING YOUR ITEMS WHEN YOU UNPACK THEM FROM THE STORE ADDS ONLY A FEW SECONDS BUT IT CAN SAVE YOU LITERALLY HOURS EACH YEAR.  WE DON’T EVEN WANT TO MENTION THE FRUSTRATION IT COULD HELP YOU AVOID…

THE PENFRIEND IS AVAILABLE AT SEVERAL SOURCES, INCLUDING THE ACB STORE AT 1.877.848.3218 OR WWW.ACB.ORG/STORE/INDEX.HTML.  BY PURCHASING THROUGH THE ACB STORE, YOU ARE SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE AMERICAN COUNCIL OF THE BLIND SINCE BOTH INDEPENDENT LIVING AIDS AND MAXI-AIDS PROVIDE A PERCENTAGE OF YOUR PURCHASE TOTAL BACK TO THE ORGANIZATION.

PRESIDENT'S RANT

THERE IS A FEATURED "QUESTION OF THE WEEK" COLUMN IN MY LOCAL NEWSPAPER.  A FEW WEEKS AGO SEVERAL PEOPLE SHARED THEIR THOUGHTS ON WHICH SERVICES SHOULD BE CUT IN ORDER TO SAVE MONEY IN OUR COMMUNITY.  OF THE FIVE RESPONDENTS, FOUR OF THEM SAID THAT TRANSPORTATION SHOULD BE CUT.  VARIOUS REASONS WERE GIVEN BUT THEY REVOLVED AROUND THE IDEA THAT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS A RARELY USED SERVICE, WHICH IS NOT NECESSARY SINCE "EVERYONE HAS A CAR THESE DAYS."

YES, THAT IS A DIRECT QUOTE FROM ONE OF THE RESPONDENTS.  YOU CAN PROBABLY GUESS THAT I WAS FURIOUS UPON HEARING THAT.  WE NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT THAT BLIND/VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE NEED RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION SO THAT WE CAN GET TO WORK, RUN OUR ERRANDS AND OTHERWISE DO OUR BIT TO KEEP OUR LOCAL ECONOMIES GOING.

I NEVER REALIZED THAT WHILE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS SO IMPORTANT TO THOSE OF US WHO ARE UNABLE TO DRIVE, IT IS VIEWED AS UNNECESSARY BY THE DRIVING PUBLIC.  THERE IS NO BUS SERVICE IN MY IMMEDIATE AREA.  WITH THE PRICE OF GAS GOING UP AND UP, I HAD HOPES OF  SOME SERVICE RETURNING.

AFTER LLISTENING TO THE RESPONSES IN THAT ARTICLE, I ASKED FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS IF THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IF IT WERE AVAILABLE.  EVERYONE SAID THEY WOULD NOT.  EACH ONE SAID THAT, DESPITE HIGHER GAS PRICES, THEY WOULD NOT GIVE UP THE CONVENIENCE OF BEING ABLE TO GO WHERE THEY WANT WHEN THEY WANT.  I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THAT IS LIKE…

NEW MEMBERS !

WE WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME OUR TWO NEW MEMBERS—CONNIE URY AND BARB PASCETTA.

A BIG THANK YOU!

MANY THANKS TO THE AKRON BLIND CENTER FOR ALLOWING US TO MEET AT THEIR SITE.  IT IS GREAT TO FINALLY HAVE A PERMANENT MEETING PLACE. IT'S BEEN ESPECIALLY NICE TO HAVE THAT HOT CUP OF COFFEE WAITING FOR US, TOO.  THANKS, BARB.

OUR LAST TWO MEETINGS HAVE FEATURED SPEAKERS.  IN FEBRUARY, BOB McDOWELL FROM THE AKRON LAW DEPARTMENT SPOKE ABOUT THE RIGHTS OF BLIND/VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE UNDER THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT.  IN MARCH, JOE MARTIN, A REGISTERED LIFE COACH, ANSWERED OUR NUTRITION AND EXERCISE QUESTIONS AND TOLD US HOW TO LEAD HEALTHIER LIVES.

WE WELCOME IDEAS FOR FUTURE TOPICS.  PLEASE CONTACT MICHELLE OR SAM AT THE ABOVE PHONE NUMBERS WITH YOUR SUGGESTIONS.

Seminars@Hadley Presents: SSDI, SSI & You

Date: Thursday, April 14

Time: 11:00 AM CDT, 16:00 GMT

Social Security is responsible for two major programs that provide benefits based on disability:  Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on prior work under Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) where payments are made on the basis of financial need.  Sometimes there is confusion about which program is more appropriate for an individual or what benefits are available from each.

If you have questions about eligibility, benefits, the effects of working on benefits, or anything else related to either of these programs administered by the Social Security Administration, join Seminars@Hadley as Valerie Williams, Project Director/Community Work Incentive Coordinator for the Austin Resource Center for Independent Living and Mandy Lomax, Area Work Incentive Coordinator for the Social Security Administration, discuss the basics of both programs and clarify the benefits of each.

This 60 minute seminar will be moderated by Hadley Outreach Coordinator Billy Brookshire.  A question and answer session will be included.

Space in this seminar is limited. Please only register if you know you are available to attend so that others are not closed out. To register for this seminar, follow this link.

Seminars@Hadley Presents: Yahoo! for Web Accessibility

Date: Thursday, February 24, 2011

Time: 1:00 p.m. CST, 19:00 GMT

Is Web accessibility a concern for you or your clients and customers? Are you finding navigating the Web to be an impossible quest?

The Web is an increasingly important resource in many aspects of our daily lives: education, employment, business, shopping, health care, recreation and much more; but navigating its waters and accessing its ports can be a difficult task for disabled Web sailors. On the other hand, when Web sites, Web technologies and Web tools are properly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality.

Join Seminars@Hadley as Yahoo! Senior Accessibility Program Manager Victor Tsaran talks about how Yahoo! promotes Web access within its community and across the World Wide Web.  Among other things, you'll learn how Yahoo! uses its Accessibility Lab to design, test, and create sites, applications and features that better meet the needs of users with disabilities.

This 60 minute seminar will be moderated by Hadley Outreach Coordinator Billy Brookshire. A question and answer session will be included.

Attention Readers!

The next meeting of the Hadley Book Chat is March 7 at 1:00 p.m. CST.  Join us as we discuss The Help by Kathryn Stockett. This piece of historic fiction provides a fascinating inside look at the maids working in Mississippi in the 1960s.  The Help is available at Bookshare and the National Library Service.  For further information and log-on instructions, contact Debbie Siegel at siegel@hadley.edu.

Hadley Announces Three New Access Technology Courses!

NEW! The Hadley School for the Blind Launches Three New Access Technology Courses

We are pleased to announce the launch of three new, structured and practical online courses designed to improve user access technology skills for users of screen readers. Each course consists of two lessons.

"Screen Readers: Listening Skills" trains users to increase their speed of listening to a screen reader. The course assists in being able to listen and comprehend a screen reader at 300 words or more a minute. It also teaches techniques to enable a user to listen to a screen reader and listen to another person on the phone at the same time.  This skill lends itself to success in most work places. For more information or to register, follow this link.

"Screen Readers: Web Browsing" is about navigating Web sites.  This course has lessons that provide tips and advice on the best methods to navigate very accessible Web sites as well as those that present more accessibility challenges.  The Internet is "an information super highway," and an ability to navigate it efficiently and skillfully is crucial to educational and workplace success. For more information or to register, follow this link.

"Screen Readers: Formatting Word Documents" is aimed at sharpening the user's skill in Microsoft Word 2007. This course covers editing text, adjusting fonts, using headings, bullets and much more while using a screen reader. Determining editing and formatting problems with a screen reader can be challenging, but mastering the techniques taught in this course can lead to confident creation of appropriate-looking documents for work or school. For more information or to register, follow this link.
